Getting there
El Salvador International Airport (airport code SAL) sits in Comalapa, about 45 km south of the city. The drive to the hotel in San Benito is roughly 45 minutes to an hour, longer at rush hour.
Transport is taken care of. Send us your flights (form at the bottom, by January 15) and someone from the family will be waiting at arrivals. No need to rent a car or book a taxi; just tell us when you land and when you leave.
Bring a passport valid for your whole stay. Many passports (US, Canada, EU and others) enter visa-free for tourism, and a small tourist-card fee may be charged on arrival. Check the rules for your passport before you fly. Immigration lines are usually quick.
Playa El Flor is on the Sonsonate coast, next to Los Cóbanos, about 1 to 1.5 hours west of the city. We'll drive out together on Friday morning and come back Sunday, and we'll arrange the rides up to I 4 Tavolini on Thursday night. Querida on Sunday is a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Where we stay
Feb 24–26 and Feb 28
Av. La Capilla 353, Colonia San Benito, San Salvador
Our home base. A quiet boutique hotel in the heart of San Benito: great breakfast, walkable to restaurants and bars, and a short ride to everything else. We're reserving the rooms as a block, so tell us which nights you need and for how many people in the form below, by December 15.
Feb 26–28
Playa El Flor, Sonsonate (next to Los Cóbanos) · we'll drive everyone there
Our home away from home on the Pacific. Golden sand, volcanic rock, soft waves and big sunsets. Two nights of cooking, swimming and doing nothing in particular.
The dinners
Thu Feb 25 · 7:30 PM
Finca Vista Alegre, Km 3.5, Carretera a Los Planes de Renderos
The birthday dinner. An intimate Italian restaurant in a finca up in Los Planes, about 25 minutes from the hotel. It's cooler up there at night. Dress: smart.
Sun Feb 28 · 6:30 PM
Bulevar del Hipódromo 587, San Benito, San Salvador
Pupusa night. Querida is the cozy annex to Lobby, a 10-minute walk from Kaleo. Casual and fun; the last family gathering of the trip.
Good to know
Late February is dry season: sunny and warm. In San Salvador expect highs around 88°F / 31°C and nights in the mid-60s °F / 18°C. The coast is hotter and more humid; Los Planes (the Thursday dinner) is noticeably cooler at night.
The currency is the US dollar, so no exchange needed. Cards work almost everywhere in the city; bring some cash in small bills for the beach, tips and markets. ATMs are common in San Salvador.
Everyone in El Salvador runs on WhatsApp, and so will this trip. Set up an eSIM before you fly or buy a Tigo or Claro SIM at the airport. Hotel Wi-Fi is good.
Airport pickups, the beach days and the Thursday dinner are all organized by the family. For free time in the city, Uber works well in San Salvador and San Benito is very walkable.
Drink bottled water. The sun is strong even when it's breezy. San Benito is a safe, walkable neighborhood; as anywhere, keep phones and bags close in crowded places.
Thursday dinner: smart (think a nice dress or jacket, no tie needed). Beach dinner: barefoot elegant. Sunday pupusas: casual. Everything else: whatever is comfortable.
